Since early this year, people have been speculating on how the new trolleys that the city will introduce are like. The trolleys, which are manufactured by Jinhua-based Youth Auto, have recently been shown to the press. Painted in green, the 12-meter trolley has its heart, the battery modules, in the rear right part of its bodywork.

The city's old trolleys have left local people with too many memories, including the most unforgettable "sticks" that connect trolleys with power grid. The press did not see the stick on the new trolley, which is lying quietly no the top of the trolley. Engineers from Youth Auto said that is the highlight of the new trolley model.

Trolleys used to only depend on the power supply from the overhead grid; hence, they will stop running immediately the sticks came loose. The new model, however, is designed for the city specially. The new trolley buses have two power systems, namely, power grid and bus-load lithium batteries. With the absence of power grid, the buses will run on its own power supply, according to a source with Young-Man Auto.

The engineers noted that the trolley can run approximately 70km without connecting the power grid. The 1-ton battery modules, which will be automatically charged when only 20%-30% power is left, have a service life of 5-6 years, or 8-9 years if they are well maintained. The replacing of such a battery module costs between CNY 300,000 and CNY 400,000.

Kazakhstan has already had 300 trolleys of such kind on the road, and Beijing has also started using such trolleys, but Hangzhou's version has the longest unplugged traveling distance as it uses lighter LiFePO battery modules, which has been unprecedented in China.

Hangzhou Public Transportation Group said on August 30 that the first batch of 30 new trolleys will be launched by the end of October 2012, replacing some trolleys of the Bus No. 151.
