On October 9th, 2015, the first future double deck Intercity trainset "Twindexx Swiss Express" from Bombardier for the SBB made its first longer journey under own power across Switzerland, from the Bombardier works in Villeneuve to Zürich Herdern (from Villeneuve to Vevey pulled by a Bm 4/4 diesel locomotive). RABe 502 203 is one of the 30 Inter Regio version. The delivery of this trains is about 3 years behind schedule and the first test runs in Switzerland are promised since several months. After the revised schedule, the first trains of this series (IR trains) should enter service in December 2016. On this particular trainset there are several things not finished yet, like the still missing "SBB signs" on front or side of cars or the rather disturbing red painted sheet metal part on the side of the front. In total the SBB will get 62 of this trains till 2020, in the versions IC200 (8 cars with dining car, baggage and family compartment), IR200 (8 cars) and IR 100 (4 cars=100 meter). An IC200 and IR200 coupled together as planned will have more than 1300 seats and will be 400 meter long.

The swans were a little more than a lucky coincidence - we had no bread to attract them, but assuming that they were used to humans throwing bread, we used little sticks instead, and they bought it, at least for some time.

With the change of timetable on December 13th, the new bridges of the Durchmesserlinie (DML) came in service. Re 460 # 046 is pushing her 9 car IC 2000 double deck train up the 2.7 % grade of the Letzigraben bridge, with 1156 meter the longest railway bridge in Switzerland, bringing the trains on the other side of the large track field between Zürich main station and Zürich Altstetten. The train is on the way from Romanshorn to Brig and made no change of direction in Zürich HB, which is no longer a terminus station for long distance trains, but a "going through station" with the new underground tracks 31-34.

A lot to see in this view from the 126 meter high "Prime Tower" (Zürich's highest building), with the Letzigrund stadium (Soccer and track and field) on the left and Altstetten on the right. In the middle Switzerland's longest railway viaduct, the new 1156 meter long single track Letzigraben bridge, which lifts the express trains leaving Zürich towards the west up to 16 meter high over the track field to Zürich Altstetten. The allowed maximum speed over this bridge is 120 km/h, the maximum down grade towards Altstetten 4.0 %! In the foreground, a highspeed tilting train ETR 610 of Trenitalia is on the bridge from the Herdern holding sidings to the main station, for a run to Milano. A commuter double deck train DPZ with locomotive Re 450 is running from Hardbrücke towards Oerlikon via the Käferberg line. Behind the Letzigraben bridge are the buildings of the SBB Reparaturcenter Altstetten (repair center), the former industrial works or "Hauptwerkstatt".

This is the south portal of the world's longest railway tunnel, the 57 kilometer long Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT), which will be inaugurated on first of June this year. The 125 meter long test train "P II LAIKA" with Re 460 # 084, standard car IV B 50 85 21-95 283-0, EC car Bpm61 61 85 20-90 267-6, Apm61 61 85 10-90 223-1 and cab car Bt 50 85 28-94 913-6, is leaving the east bore of the tunnel. The test runs take place under the responsibility of Alptransit AG, which built the tunnel. From first of June, the SBB will be responsible for further test operation till December 2016, when timetabled traffic will start. At 02.18 PM: We have a look down from the mountain, about 500 meter above the valley floor, to the south portal of the Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT), 57 kilometer long between Erstfeld and Pollegio through the Alps, which will be inaugurated on 1st of June, exactly in 8 weeks from now. A test train with locomotive Re 460 # 084 and four cars left the east bore of the tunnel some minutes ago and brought some technicians to the fresh air. In this moment, two highspeed tilting trains are meeting on the "old" Gotthard mountain line, which was newly laid in this part some years ago. One train is the ICN 671 from Basel via Lucerne to Lugano, which is run by an ETR 610 since change of timetable in December 2015. The other is Eurocity 16 from Milan to Zürich. If both would have been on time exactly, they would have met in Biasca, about 5 kilometer from here. But train 671 had about 8 minutes delay and train 16 about 2 minutes, so their meeting was just here above the GBT south portal. A very lucky and unique shot.

Test run for the inauguration of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) on 1st of June 2016. In front of the operation center sud (Betriebszentrale Süd) of the SBB in Pollegio, an Intercity tilt train ICN is running north (to the left) on the "old" mountain line towards the Gotthard, while another ICN (in the foreground) is waiting on the siding of the doubletrack line, which is going to the south portal (direction left) of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel. With this train, the procedures for the opening ceremony were tested and practised this day. Between the dispatching center and the railway line, temporary installations were built for the inauguration ceremony, like stage, stands, tents etc.

The Voralpen Express (VAE) 2584 of the Südostbahn seems very small on the highest railway bridge of Switzerland, the 99 meter high and 365 meter long huge Sitter viaduct of the former Bodensee-Toggenburg Bahn. The viaduct with a half parabola girder was erected in 1910, when the line from St.Gallen to Wattwil was built, and has a main span of 120 meter and the line has a grade of 1.6 %. The Voralpen Express is a push pull train with railcars RBDe 561 # 082 and 083 and 6 intermediate cars, all in a special paint scheme. Below the bridge is the Kubel hydroelectric power station and the 22 meter long wooden bridge over the Sitter from 1800.
