Magda Kopczynska from the European Commission said: "I am glad that the Central Europe programme is funding a project like TROLLEY, as trolleybuses are an intelligent, efficient and environmental-friendly transport mode. Best-practice transport solutions should come from Europe. If the TROLLEY project could achieve that the awareness for trolleybuses as an option for public transport in European cities is rising, this would be a great success!"

Join the new and free TROLLEY image campaign "ebus - the smart way!"

Trolleybuses are considered efficient, sustainable, ready-to-use, and environmentally-friendly public transportation. To spread and consolidate this word among citizens, decision makers and relevant public transport stakeholders throughout Europe, TROLLEY has created the European image campaign "ebus - the smart way!", to promote trolleybuses as smart, clean and green solution for urban public transportation of the future.

The ebus campaign consists of promotional material such as billboards, posters, or swing cards which can be used and adapted by interested cities and trolleybus operators free of charge throughout Europe.

The trolleybus cities of Salzburg, Eberswalde in Germany, Szeged in Hungary, Brno in the Czech Republic, Gdynia in Poland, and Parma in Italy are about to run the campaign in the second half of 2011. Other cities in Europe are now being invited to follow, and to shape a new and more positive image of trolleybuses.

If you want to adapt our campaign and need more information please contact Mr Johann Kogler. More detailed information will be provided here on 23 August.

Project of the Week : "TROLLEY" - Seven cities to promote trolleybuses as solution for smart urban mobility in Europe

Today is European Cooperation Day. As one of the many projects in the field of territorial cooperation supported by the EU, the Central Europe project "TROLLEY" is one consortium of 7 European cities: Salzburg in Austria, Gdynia in Poland, Leipzig and Eberswalde in Germany, Brno in Czech Republic, Szeged in Hungary and Parma in Italy.

What is at stake?

The "TROLLEY" project, which benefits from an EU financing of EUR 3.3 million for the period 2007-2013, covers 25% of all trolleybuses as well as 30% of all trolleybus lines that are currently operating in whole Central Europe.

The project pursues two aims: firstly, the promotion of the trolleybus system towards the 1.5 million citizens in the project partner cities as a sustainable, safe and economic urban transport solution as well as towards all European cities. The second goal of the project is to invest in innovative technologies to modernize the existing trolleybus systems of the project partner cities and therefore make energy saving and use the energy generated by the trolleybuses more efficiently.

What are the results?

Thanks to a renaissance of the trolleybus accompanied by a Europe-wide promotion campaign, the cities Verona (Italy) and Leeds (United Kingdom) have decided to put in place one trolleybus transport system. The German cities Osnabruck and Bremerhaven are seriously thinking of it.

As regards energy savings and efficiency, the advantages of using trolley busses systems are obvious: 25% of the energy can be saved by trolleybuses through recuperation. With the introduction of new energy storage systems like "supercapacitors" in Parma, trolleybuses are able to ride with their own recuperated energy and are therefore self-sufficient. In the city of Eberswalde, 97% of CO2 emissions can potentially be reduced by operating Europe's first Trolley-Battery-Hybrid-Bus compared to conventional diesel buses.

Finally, the "TROLLEY" project contributes to make clear over Europe that trolley buses are a stand-alone, future-oriented and modern public transport system.

Dr. Heinz Schaden, Mayor of the City of Salzburg, states about the project:

"Salzburg runs its trolleybus transport system by using solely energy from hydro power. This is the most environmentally friendly option to offer public urban transport to citizens. Over the past years, the City of Salzburg has invested a lot in this citizen- and urban-friendly system, especially in the framework of the EU co-financed TROLLEY project, in order to increase the quality of life in the city. The actions taken in cooperation with six other European cities to promote trolleybuses are very useful to make this mean of transport more popular all over Europe."

Iata experienta diseminata in cadrul Grupului "TROLLEY" de catre BBG Eberswalde (Germania).
